Annoucing the First Ever Dorm Energy Competition at Brown!

April 9, 2010

Greetings fellow Brunonians!

On behalf of EcoReps and the Department of Facilities Management, I am very excited to announce the first ever dorm energy reduction competition to be held on College Hill.  Over the next three weeks, students in select residence halls will compete to reduce their electricity consumption.  We’ve chosen the following dorms to participate this semester:

Hope College

Machado House

Poland House

Slater Hall

Participation is not limited to these four dorms – these will be the only buildings we monitor and report data on, but anyone in another dorm who is interested in learning more about reducing his or her energy consumption is invited to join in.  Also, for those of you who are feeling a little neglected at this point, fear not!  Stay tuned next Fall for a larger campus-wide competition, where Brown students will not only compete amongst themselves, but also against other universities across the country.

The competition will begin THIS SUNDAY NIGHT, April 11th at midnight and will end at midnight on Sunday, May 2nd.  Results for each of the four dorms will be reported on this website every week so you will be able to keep track of how your dorm matches up against the others.

There will of course be fantastic prizes offered to the winning dorm – these will be unveiled on Sunday night shortly before event kickoff, so check back then.  Also, stay tuned for a set of energy reduction tips so you can start strategizing with your friends about how to most effectively reduce your energy consumption.

Over the next three weeks, the “Dorm Energy Competition” tab on this website will be your one-stop-shop for all relevant competition announcements, so check it early and often!

Finally if you have any questions or comments, include them below or email your EcoRep Coordinators:  Adam Maynard ( or Kai Morrell (
