Hey everyone,

Check out the following graph of the energy consumption data for all four dorms.

As you can see, no dorm succeeded in reducing its energy consumption over the course of the competition.  Unfortunately this also means that no prizes will be awarded this semester, as the goal of the contest was to decrease the amount of electricity used by dorm residents.

We know this will likely come as a disappointment to those of you who actively participated throughout the competition, but we nevertheless hope that your involvement was worthwhile and it was a valuable opportunity to learn a little bit about how your day-to-day behaviors affect the amount of energy you consume.

Also, please know that what was a learning experience for you was a learning experience for us as well, and we are already developing our plans for the campus wide competition in the fall when we will not only be competing against our peers at Brown but also against students at other schools across the country.  That competition will look very different than the one we put together this semester.

We value your input and your suggestions highly.  You’re the ones we’re doing this for, after all.  We’ve already gotten some good feedback including:

  • Earlier and more thorough publicity, including emails, a Facebook event, etc. to create a buzz among the student body.
  • Conduct programs or hold meetings with the RPLs to answer students’ questions about the competition.
  • More consistent blog and weekly result updates.
  • Real time dashboard monitoring of energy consumption.

If you have any other ideas about how we can make this experience more meaningful for you, please let us know by posting a comment here on the blog or by emailing adam_maynard@brown.edu.

Again, a big thank you to those of you who participated this semester, and we look forward to the same enthusiasm and interest during the competition next fall.
