Each year during move in cardboard creates a huge problem on campus.  We encourage students to fold up their boxes and send them back home with parents.  If that’s not possible, we request students place them in strategically and temporarily located recycling dumpsters that are imported for that sole purpose.  We began this practice last year and saw an immediate increase of 26 tons of cardboard that were diverted from the trash dumpsters. Cardboard collected in the month of September alone was 40 tons!  This is good for many reasons.  Most important its good for the environment, but it’s also good because we avoid fines from the fire marshal and our environment health and safety department when they’re left in hallways.

A map of the cardboard dumpster locations is included here along with signage.  If you see someone struggling with what to do with their empty cardboard boxes, show them the way.
